The pre and post-natal period is a time of significant change in the female body. The hormones that support the developing foetus and prepare the mother for childbirth are maintained in the post-natal period, particularly while breastfeeding, and have an impact on ligament laxity. These changes can contribute to musculoskeletal pain and injury. Common pregnancy-related problems include:
- Incontinence
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Abdominal separation
- Back, neck and pelvic pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis
While exercise is healthy and encouraged during and after pregnancy, the above mentioned problems can often be very limiting and exercise may exacerbate the problem. We can guide you on how to safely commence or maintain exercise during and after pregnancy.
